A Taste for Mystery

1. How did you start writing erotic romance?
I don't!  I write a multiplicity of genres but erotic romance is not one of them.  A Taste for Mystery consists of two novellas in sequence of timeline about two main characters Jack and Carolyn who are detectives. Two novellas, two detectives, two lovers...what can go wrong?!
2. Plotter or pantster?
So very much a pantster. And I thought so much that I'd be a plotter. I really did. I am so fastidious in other aspects of my life. I do have the general story in my head to start but I am a total pantster. It is so much fun that way too!
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Dentyne Fire gum because that's a little vice I allow while I'm writing (and hey, its sugarless LOL); a Dr. Who miniature Tardis that makes sounds when you play with it; and the very depressing mail organizer which consists of my folder of bills for the month.
4. Favorite food?
Depends on my mood but will most always be breakfast, pizza or chocolate.
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
I wrote a perfect hero in A Taste for Mystery but my favorite character is the anti-hero. What comes out is that we are all flawed human beings, capable of being heroic. If we have no flaws, wouldn't that be kind of boring? If we have too many vices or problems then are we really worth the time of a relationship? These aren't easy questions when you're dealing with people you care about.
6. I write because I always wanted to be a writer, since pre-school and in college I took every writing class I could in college when I wasn't taking the classes for my degree (because I wanted a "solid" career to support me even though I wanted to write.) That was my fatal mistake: I should have gone for an MFA and settled for campus life forever but when you're young you don't often know for sure what is best or definitely what you'll want in 20 years.
I also didn't clue into the fact that poetry is so much a part of my soul. You'd think I would have since I started writing that at 13 and kept on but I was too thick-headed or maybe boy crazy, because that took up a lot of time in high school and college. LOL
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
Complex, enigmatic, metaphorical language, capable of turning either towards good or not so good, walking a line between worlds and expectations.
I haven't written this complete character yet. Only pieces. Something to look forward to.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
One that I deleted because I took out all graphic scenes. However, writing doesn't have to be graphic to be sexy. Personally, I find the sizzle in chemistry between characters via dialogue to be some of the sexiest writing you can read. I like the verbal sparring between the two main characters in A Taste for Mystery, but when push comes to shove you see that they each would put their lives in the hands of the other.
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
I can only talk romance since I don't write erotica but my advice would be as above. Building a character and taking time on their relationship(s) makes anything you write that much more sexy and interesting.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
Something REALLY different. My current project which will actually last a long time is Kill Chain, an interactive book which is being written a chapter at a time on a platform called StoryShift  (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/634402)  where readers vote on choices at the end of each chapter and the writer then has to write the next chapter based on the outcome. Check it out and vote! I'm writing in a really different style for this one.
Romance wise I would like to write the next book for Jack, Carolyn and friends which would be another mystery. There are a lot of character dynamics I would like to go further with for these two.

Excerpt
He had six-pack abs, and I wanted to feel the carbonation.
This one dressed like the stereotype of a construction worker, down to the handkerchief he used to wipe sweat off his forehead. I don't know if he or the hot day brought it out, but sweat poured off of me too. He had no interest in me as a person, though. I was invading his territory. Still, I enjoyed the view. For my part, I knew my clothes looked crappy. I didn’t have to wear uniforms anymore, but my street clothes, well they were very—street. So there I stood, a turd in the sun in front of this Adonis. Oh well.
He pointed to a small trailer up a muddy hill. The supervisor I asked to see apparently stayed in there. Stayed, as in never left. Great. Mud. Now I'd be a dried turd in the sun. Adonis went back to digging and I started the trek up the hill. At least I came with boots. Steel toed.
Once I made it to the trailer, I heard an argument going on inside.
"Look, I don't care who you are. The plans are publically filed. Go get them yourself!" yelled someone.
Then I heard a voice I knew. Calm, cool, subversive. "Is there any reason you're being so difficult? A man did die on your watch."
An encounter I hadn’t planned on. Well, at least not until later tonight. I knocked loudly on the door and with my sweetest voice said, "Hello, boys. Am I interrupting something?"
"Great," groused the supervisor. "A party." He appeared to me like another stereotype, puffing on a cigar over a fat jowl line and rotund stomach that threatened to overturn the small desk he was behind. I guess there's a reason for stereotypes. He looked about four hamburgers away from a heart attack.
On a wooden chair in front of the supervisor sat Jack. A fellow independent detective, an ally at times, a competitor...and my on and off lover.
"Well, well, well," he said smiling, but I could tell he wasn’t happy to see me. Not here. It meant we were both working the same case. "Hello, Carolyn. Who hired you?"
"Parents."
"Girlfriend," he answered back.
We stared at each other. Complications.
